Going on holiday with your dog in Provence Occitane

Deciding to go on holiday with your dog in Provence Occitane ? I took the plunge, and to be honest, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The Gard region is full ofnatural spaces and little getaways that are ideal for sharing special moments with your four-legged friend. You’ll love going for a walk here, and so will your dog!

Holidays with your dog, pure happiness

As soon as we arrived, I realised that Provence Occitane would be perfect for the two of us. The climate is mild for most of the year, which is really nice for walking. Even in summer, when it’s a bit hotter, you can just find a spot by the river to cool off. It’s our little ritual: a swim in the Cèze or the Ardèche, followed by a moment in the shade of the trees. It’s a real treat, both for my dog Funky and for me!

When the mistral blows, no problem: we head for the local forests, which are real havens of peace. The advantage here is that dogs are allowed in all the natural areas. This means we can enjoy a holiday in the fresh air, between the countryside and the river. The feeling of freedom you get in Provence Occitane is incomparable. You’re guaranteed to recharge your batteries!

Where to sleep with your dog in Provence Occitane?

One of my concerns before leaving was to find accommodation where my dog would be welcome in the Gard. Good news: there are lots of options! I quickly found a gîte that accepted pets. And to make things easier for you, theTourist Office has a list ofdog-friendly accommodation. Whether you prefer the comfort of a hotel, the friendliness of a campsite or the originality of unusual accommodation, you’re bound to find something to suit you.

Some holiday residences even offer extra services for dog owners: gardens where your dog can roam freely or walking trails right next door. My favourite extra? The‘dog bars‘ where our companions can quench their thirst. It’s simple: at Provence Occitane, everything is done to ensure that you and your dog have a magical holiday!

Dog-friendly restaurants

I wondered if I’d be able to take my dog to restaurants without any problems, and the answer is yes! Many restaurants in Provence Occitane are dog-friendly, so I was able to enjoy some delicious local dishes without worrying about leaving Funky alone in the accommodation. What’s more, these establishments often have ‘dog bars’, perfect for keeping him comfortable while you enjoy a good meal.

Just choose from one of the many restaurants in the area, and you’re bound to find one that will delight you, and they’ll all welcome you and your dog with a smile!

Hiking with your dog in Provence Occitane

For me, going on holiday with my dog is also an opportunity to go on some great walks. And here, I’ve been spoilt for choice! Between the vineyards, the garrigue and the river banks, there are so many paths to explore. Funky and I loved discovering the different itineraries, all accessible and well signposted.

My favourite walks

One of our favourite places is the Camp de César in Gaujac, an ancient oppidum where history meets nature. It’s perfect for a quiet stroll with your furry friend. We also tried the hike to the Château de Gicon, a little gem with a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside.

And if you prefer shorter walks, there are also interpretation trails perfect for a gentle stroll. Just a word of advice: during the hunting season, look out for signs indicating a hunt in progress, but don’t worry, there are plenty of safe, well-marked trails.

Dog-friendly beaches

What could be better than a walk by the water with your dog? In Provence Occitane, all the beaches along the Cèze andArdèche rivers are dog-friendly. We had an unforgettable time playing by the river, running in the water and enjoying the coolness.

A few tips for safe swimming

Even though all the beaches are dog-friendly, I’m always careful to respect other people and local wildlife. It’s easy to wander off a bit to find a quiet spot, so that everyone, dogs included, can enjoy a peaceful moment by the water. And don’t forget to carry a little bag with you to pick up after your dog – it helps to keep these natural areas pleasant for everyone.
