Festival of the Chapels – Medieval Singing Workshop

During this one-day workshop, Els Janssens offers a unique teaching approach, drawing on medieval traditions: oral transmission and an understanding of the body as an instrument for vocal expression and memorisation.


Learning takes place mainly without sheet music, through listening and imitation.
We invite you to a medley of songs from the Middle Ages and the present day, featuring monodies and polyphonies selected from the works of Johannes Ciconia (14th century), the manuscript known as the ‘Cyprus Manuscript’ (early 15th century), and (excerpts from) pieces by Sophie Lacaze (born 1963), Caroline Marçot (born 1974), Ivan Moody (1964–2024), Petr Eben (1929–2007)…
