Exhibition: ‘Religious Landscapes in the Christian West from the 15th to the 19th Century’

This exhibition will show how landscape appeared in Western religious painting until it became the main element of representation, with the religious subject becoming merely a pretext.

Religious painting in the West gradually began to incorporate views of the real world starting in the 13th century, particularly in Italy under the influence of Cimabue, one of the first painters to pave the way for naturalism. A new style of painting took shape between the 14th and 16th centuries, seeking to suggest three-dimensional space, voluminous figures modeled by subtle shading, natural gestures, and human emotions. The world was now depicted as it actually exists, reflecting divine perfection. Beginning in the 17th century, thanks to the development of the landscape genre—which was particularly popular in Dutch painting—religious scenes gradually gave way to depictions of nature, which, little by little, became a subject in its own right.
