Chapels Festival – Mora Vocis

Presentation

The two artists, Géraldine Jeannot and Els Janssens, offer a sonic journey rather than a historical chronology, and set sail on the melismatic waves of the monodies and polyphonies of the so-called ‘Western’ Middle Ages.

Created in 2026, the ‘Sacred Myriads’ respond to a desire for a musical journey featuring medieval pieces that transport the two artists.
Running through the programme, the sumptuous monodies of the great visionary Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179) give pride of place to the Virgin Mary, womanhood and nature. The compositions of Kassia of Constantinople, a leading figure of the 9th century, and Birgitta of Sweden, a 14th-century Nordic visionary, broaden the geographical scope and perfectly illuminate an era often perceived as dark. The polyphonic works of Johannes Ciconia and numerous anonymous pieces from the manuscripts of Saint Martial of Limoges, Las Huelgas and English libraries illustrate the immense variety of musical styles that spanned the centuries of the Middle Ages.
