Off the beaten track, Vénéjan opens the doors to a village full of character, set in the heights of the Gard. Here, the light caresses the old stones, the narrow streets exude authenticity, and the landscapes embrace the horizon. Labelled a “Petite cité de caractère” (small town of character), this unspoilt place is a promise of escape, between its medieval heritage and unspoilt nature.
As you stroll through the ancient heart of Vénéjan, every step you take echoes of the past. The cobbled streets reveal a village frozen in time, where tradition and a gentle way of life coexist peacefully. The carefully restored stone buildings tell the story of the men and women who forged this southern land.
Both discreet and majestic, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste chapel stands out gracefully in the Vénéjan landscape. Built in the XIIᵉ century, this Romanesque building is one of the oldest witnesses to the spiritual life of the village. Tucked away off the beaten track, it is surprising in its elegant sobriety and the emotion it arouses as soon as you cross the threshold.
Inside, time seems to stand still. The stonework, with its centuries-old patina, radiates a soothing freshness, and the natural light filtering in through small openings enhances the intimacy of the place. This modest space, steeped in history, invites both contemplation and inner reflection.
Every element of the chapel, from the altar to the rounded vaults, bears witness to the ancestral skills of the builders and the faith of successive generations who have tended this place with fervour. Even today, it remains a powerful symbol of local identity, bringing together residents and visitors for special occasions such as religious festivals and intimate summer concerts.
Perched on a hill bathed in light, Vénéjan’s windmill, built in 1813, proudly stands out against the mistral wind. This living monument, painstakingly restored by a handful of enthusiasts, is much more than a decorative feature: it’s thesoul of the village, a symbol of its rural identity and craft heritage.
For nearly two centuries, this stone and wood mill transformed grain into flour, to the rhythm of the seasons and the winds. Long dormant, it is now reborn during the European Heritage Days and local festivals, when its wings resume their majestic dance, much to the amazement of young and old alike.
Its restoration, completed in 1999 thanks to a local association, was an act of cultural transmission, combining collective memory and voluntary commitment. Every element of the mechanism – the gears, the millstones, the pivoting roof – was rebuilt using period techniques, using noble woods and traditional skills.
Accessible to the public, the mill site also offers an exceptional panorama of the Rhône valley, combining nature and heritage in a serene setting. By visiting this emblematic site, you will be helping to preserve a unique rural heritage and contributing to the values of sustainability and authenticity that are so dear to our region.
Another not-to-be-missed spot for a superb view is the belvedere. Once up there, the view extends as far as the imposing Mont Ventoux, via the meandering Rhône. As evening falls, the orange glow of twilight sets the sky ablaze, transforming the moment into a tableau vivant. It’s an ideal place to recharge your batteries, admire the raw beauty of the landscape and savour the tranquillity of the south.
