Goudargues

Presentation

The café terraces come alive with the first light of summer, the markets are bustling day and night, offering this little green jewel some of the most beautiful highlights of Occitan Provence.

Nicknamed “the little Venice of the Gard,” Goudargues is resolutely marked by the presence of water. Roman vestiges attest to a human presence near the fountain as early as the 3rd century AD. Over the following centuries, Benedictine monks continuously exploited this providential wealth, irrigating their crops and developing an oil and grain mill. Although it also suffered the assaults of history, the village has managed to preserve beautiful vestiges, such as its Romanesque abbey church. Restored in the 19th century and classified as a Historic Monument, it remains the jewel of this market town where it is pleasant to stroll along the canal in the shade of plane trees. The café terraces come alive with the first light of summer, the markets are bustling day (Wednesday morning) and night, offering this little green jewel some of the most beautiful highlights of Occitan Provence.
